Gilles Lamontagne

Joseph-Georges-Gilles-Claude Lamontagne (French pronunciation: ​[ʒozɛf ʒɔʁʒ ʒil klod lamɔ̃taɲ]; April 17, 1919 – June 14, 2016) was a Canadian retired politician. He served as the 24th Lieutenant Governor of Quebec from March 28, 1984 through August 9, 1990. Before, he served as Mayor of Quebec City from December 1, 1965 through December 1, 1977.^[1] He retired in 1990.

Lamontagne was born in Montreal.^[2] He fought during World War II. Lamontagne fought as a bomber pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He ended his air force service in the rank of flight lieutenant in 1945. In 1949, he married Mary Schaefer. They would remain married until her death in 2006. They had four children.

In 1990, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. In 2000, he was made a Knight of the National Order of Quebec and in 2005, a member of l'Ordre des Grands Québécois. He is an honorary member of the Royal Military College of Canada.

Lamontagne died on June 14, 2016 in Quebec City, aged 97.^[3]
